2020 has come and gone, but much of the 2021 design trends are based on the “new normal” we’ve experienced this past year. Baldwin County’s housing market has not slowed down during the pandemic, so whether you’re considering selling or looking for a new home, it may be beneficial to know what’s currently desirable. While design trends come and go, we’ve rounded up a few predictions (based on this article from Southern Living) in hopes to inspire your renovating and/or home searching process. Let’s take a look.
1. Plush Accent Pieces
There’s no doubt – quarantining opened our eyes to the value of comfortable and dreamy living spaces. According to Southern Living, textures are trending softer for interior design pieces like pillows and ottomans. They anticipate 2021 to be the year of velvet, shearling and mohair accents.
2. Bolder Hues
Pantone has named their 2021 Color of the Year, and it’s quite literally a shocker. The sunny yellow color of “Illuminating” is their choice. Additionally, HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams has named their 2021 Color of the Year as “Passionate” – a bold red color.
3. Germ-Free Spaces
2020 also made us extremely mindful of the need to disinfect. Southern Living shares that current kitchen trends include touch-free appliances and non-porous surfaces.
4. Outdoor Comfort
When you can’t get out and about as often, your backyard takes on a new level of use and value. Southern Living reports that backyard spaces with enhancements for outdoor dining, working, exercising and/or relaxing are the new hot trend.
5. Private Quarters
Now that the office, classroom, gym and daycare can be found all under the same roof, it helps to have some defined spaces. While the open floor plan is not completely retired, Southern Living does see a trend toward solutions for dividing spaces (adding barn doors, bookshelves, etc.).
